A chance meeting blossomed into a deep love. Years of shared moments, laughter, and delicious food ended abruptly with her tragic death, leaving behind a heartbreaking void.
An experience shared by u/Wind_Vast on Reddit.
I met her in Makongeni. She was shopping for sandals; I was looking for a Maasai knife.
I met her in my twenties. She would rant for hours, and I would listen, captivated. She had the cutest smile—one of those rare smiles that reached her eyes, making them light up.
I met her again in 2020. I asked when she would give in. She told me John had persisted and lasted a minute. I promised I’d do better. She finally agreed, and I lasted 42 seconds—18 seconds shy of John's record. We never spoke about it again.
We used to meet at Club Bondeni. Her favorite drink was red wine. She would sip it slowly and tell me about Ken—the guy who had pursued her for years. I’d listen, nodding along, secretly hating Ken.
We moved in together in Kasarani. She made the best samosas on Earth—perhaps even in some corners of heaven. Every meal she made was a masterpiece, even her githeri had a taste that lingered.
Then one night, my phone rang. It was her number, but the voice on the other end wasn’t hers.
“She’s gone,” the man said.
A drunk driver, speeding at 140 km/h, hit her so hard her brain scattered across the road. Just like that, my Wangui was gone. She wasn’t coming back.
That night at Makaburini, as she was lowered into the ground, reality hit me like a blow to the chest.
This thing called love… it was too good to be true.
