Saraki urges open Senate probe into Akpabio-Akpoti-Uduaghan allegations, citing precedent for transparency & upholding Senate integrity, a pillar of democracy.
The recent events in the Senate involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have been deeply concerning. Beyond the individuals involved, this issue affects the integrity, credibility, and public perception of the Senate as an institution. Those of us who have served in the National Assembly—whether as leaders, members, or staff—understand the importance of safeguarding its reputation and upholding its core values.
It is crucial that both parties, along with their supporters inside and outside the chamber, consider the broader impact of their words and actions. Every claim, counterclaim, reaction, and response should be weighed carefully to ensure that the integrity of the Senate is not undermined. The resolution of this matter must adhere to the Constitution, the laws of Nigeria, Senate rules, and parliamentary conventions. It must be fair, transparent, and impartial, not designed to shield or favor any party but to uncover the truth and protect the institution from any perception of lawlessness or impunity.
Given the serious allegations made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the most appropriate step forward is an open, transparent, and thorough investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. Both parties should fully cooperate and present their cases before the committee. This is not unprecedented—previous Senate Presidents have voluntarily submitted to similar inquiries to ensure credibility and fairness.
For instance, during my tenure as Senate President in the 8th Senate, a senator falsely alleged that I imported an official vehicle without paying customs duty. Confident in the truth, I welcomed an investigation by the Ethics Committee, appeared before them in full view of the media, and provided testimony that ultimately disproved the claims. To further ensure impartiality, I stepped down from presiding over the Senate when the committee’s report was debated on the floor. The transparent handling of the matter reassured the public and upheld the integrity of the institution. The 10th Senate should follow this precedent.
Transparency in this matter is critical—not only to address the immediate dispute but also to prevent the Senate from being perceived as an institution that tolerates sexual harassment, gender discrimination, abuse of office, disregard for Senate rules, or disorderly conduct. Due process must be followed, and if wrongdoing is found, it should be corrected through appropriate measures.
To be clear, I am not declaring Akpabio guilty of any wrongdoing, nor am I stating that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims are entirely justified. My stance is simple: a fair investigation is necessary to uncover the truth and protect the Senate’s integrity.
The Senate is a pillar of democracy, and its sanctity must be upheld above personal or political interests. Every democratic institution is only as strong as the trust it commands from the people. We must, therefore, ensure that no individual—leader or member—compromises the dignity of this vital institution.
