Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Tuesday that his recent Oval Office meeting with US President Donald Trump “did not go as expected,” calling it “regrettable” while reaffirming Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate for peace.
"I want to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace," Zelensky posted on X. "None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to secure a lasting peace."
Reflecting on the White House meeting last Friday, Zelensky acknowledged that it did not unfold as intended, emphasizing the need for improved future cooperation.
"Our meeting in Washington did not go as planned. It is regrettable that it happened this way. Now is the time to make things right. We hope for constructive future cooperation and communication," he stated.
Zelensky also reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to sign an agreement on minerals and security, which had been scheduled for signing on Friday but was disrupted following the contentious White House meeting.
"Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time and in any suitable format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and stronger guarantees, and I truly hope it will be effective," he said.
Zelensky outlined a peace framework similar to the proposal by French President Emmanuel Macron at Sunday’s Western leaders' summit.
"We are ready to work swiftly to end the war. The first steps could include the release of prisoners and an immediate truce in the sky—banning missiles, long-range drones, and bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure—as well as a maritime truce if Russia reciprocates. From there, we aim to move quickly through all necessary stages and collaborate with the US on securing a strong final peace deal," Zelensky stated.
The Ukrainian President expressed gratitude for the US's role in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, highlighting a key moment in military assistance.
"We deeply appreciate America's efforts to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. We will never forget how things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this."
