Lagos Government Probes Death of 2-Year-Old Pupil in School
The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil at Smiley Kids Montessori School, Sangotedo, Lagos Island.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 15, and was shared on social media by the grieving mother via her X handle, Ellla@AbiaPrincess_X.
The bereaved mother has demanded answers, alleging her daughter drowned in the school’s swimming pool. However, she suspects foul play, raising concerns that her child may have been electrocuted and the body placed in the pool to simulate drowning.
Mother’s Account:
The heartbroken mother shared that her daughter left for school healthy but returned lifeless. While the school claimed the child drowned, the mother shared a picture of the swimming pool, which was secured with a high barricade designed to prevent children from accessing it. She questioned how a two-year-old could have climbed over the barricade.
She wrote on X:
"Smiley School International, Sangotedo, Lagos Island, please bring her back. We cannot bear this alone. Please, if you have your child in that school, beware. They lied that they are closed due to maintenance. I lost my Pinky Ella."
Government’s Response:
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Mrs. Titilayo Adeniyi-Vivour, expressed the government's commitment to a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
Responding to the mother’s post, the DSVA stated:
"My goodness. First off, we are so sorry for your loss, and thank you for bringing this situation to our notice. Please send us a DM as soon as you can."
Adeniyi-Vivour further disclosed:
"The Lagos State Task Force on Safeguarding and Child Protection, which includes representatives from the Office of Education Quality Assurance, DSVA, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and Lagos State Safety Commission, visited the school today on a fact-finding mission."
Additionally, the state government has engaged the Police (Ogombo Division) and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, to support the criminal investigation and prosecution if necessary.
The Lagos State Government assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring justice for the grieving family and addressing any lapses in child safety within educational institutions.
