Syria's Alawites plead with Israel for protection from the new regime's violence, requesting military aid and a firm stance against Islamist forces.
JERUSALEM (VINnews) – The leadership of Syria’s Alawite community has issued an urgent appeal to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials, including the Foreign Minister, seeking protection from the country’s newly established government. According to a report by i24NEWS, the plea was delivered through local mediators facilitating communication between Syrian communities and Israel.
The appeal follows a wave of violent crackdowns by Syria’s new president, Ahmad al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani), who has reportedly orchestrated massacres targeting the Alawite population. The Alawite leaders’ request comes in response to Israel’s recent declaration that it will not tolerate any attacks by the new Syrian regime against the country’s Druze population.
In reaction to the recent violence, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz strongly criticized the Islamist leadership now in power in Syria. However, he has not yet extended any direct assistance to the Alawite community, which had previously aligned itself with the pro-Iranian Assad regime.
“[Abu Mohammed] al-Julani traded his robe for a suit to present a moderate image,” Katz stated, referencing the Syrian president’s former affiliation with extremist groups. “Now, his true face is revealed—an al-Qaeda-inspired jihadist committing horrifying atrocities against civilians.”
In their letter, the Alawite leaders voiced deep concern over their community’s fate following the downfall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. They described the massacres unfolding in Alawite strongholds and called for urgent Israeli intervention.
“The world remains silent as our people suffer, but Israel’s voice is heard. We reach out to you in friendship and promise to be your most loyal allies,” the letter read.
The Alawite leaders outlined several key demands, urging Israel to:
The letter also expressed a willingness to strengthen ties between the Alawite community and Israel. “If you come to the Syrian coast, which is predominantly Alawite, you will be welcomed with songs and flowers,” they assured.
The situation in Syria remains highly volatile as tensions between various factions escalate, leaving the fate of the Alawite population uncertain. Whether Israel will act on this appeal remains to be seen.
